What is Platinum?

Platinum is a rare precious metal that is more valuable than gold and is found in a few countries of the world.

Platinum is typically considered to be more prestigious and is more expensive than gold because of its rarity. It is resistant to nitric and hydrochloric acids, but it can be dissolved at high temperatures by aqua regia.

Platinum is naturally white in appearance but not 100% white, actually slightly grayish white.  Platinum has an atomic number of 78.
Platinum  also highly corrosion resistant and has a high boiling point around 1700 degrees Celsius or 3220 degrees Fahrenheit. Chemically, platinum is one of the most stable elements in nature. It is referred to as Noble metal because of its high stability.Platinum is much stronger and more durable than gold and platinum does not react with light, heat, water and air in the environment and thus does not corrode. This is the  reason applications of platinum in various fields is increasing day by day globally .

The precious metal's uses are extensive, including jewelry, armaments,  automotive, chemical processing, and electronics. The electronics we use daily,  from the display on our smartphone to the hard drive in our computer, contain platinum.

Although platinum  is not as widely known globally as gold, inspite of this it has an influence on the manufacture of expensive jewelery around the world.  Platinum has been used worldwide since 1920. The first platinum mine in the world was found in Colombia, followed by the discovery of platinum mines in Russia in 1819. Then platinum mines were discovered in Canada in 1888 and later Canada became the number one platinum exporting country in the world. Then, in 1924, huge platinum mines were discovered in South Africa, and currently 80% of the world's platinum needs are supplied from South Africa.

As platinum is 50% more denser  than gold, a platinum ring of the same size will weigh more than gold.  For this reason, if we want to make a piece of jewelery with platinum that is of the same size of gold , it will definitely weigh more than gold and will be more costlier.

The pure  platinum is more harder  and stronger so, it will not be easy to make ornaments with that platinum,  it will be very difficult to give the desired shape. Therefore, while making jewelry, alloys are made by adding a mixture of different metals with platinum.  For this reason iridium, ruthenium and cobalt are added.  The addition of ruthenium makes platinum jewelry brighter and whiter.
