Dasht-e-lut and Dasht-e-Kavir are iran's largest desert.
Dasht-e-lut or Lut desert also known as the Loot Desert, is a large salt desert in Kerman and Sistan province of Iran and is the world’s 25th largest desert. Lut Desert is one of the world’s driest and hottest places. It was inscribed by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.
In Persian language “Lut” refers to bare land without water and devoid of vegetation. It lacks of vegetations and water, two vital factors for the survival of humans and animals; as a result, some indigenous people still are afraid to go to this area. Therefore, this wonderful land has still remained unknown and mysterious to researchers.
The region often experiences Earth’s highest land surface temperatures: a temperature of 70.7C has been measured by NASA's Aqua satellite in 2005.
The hottest portion of Dasht-e Lut is Gandom Beryan, a large plateau covered in dark lava, approximately 480 square kilometres or 190 sq mi in area.According to local legend, this Persian name گندم بریان, means "toasted wheat" originates from an accident where a load of wheat was left in the desert which was then scorched by the heat in a few days.
Why is the Dasht-e-lut desert so hot?
Its most extreme hot spots are covered with dark rocks, volcanic debris and sand. This makes the surface so dark that it does not reflect the light and therefore absorbs solar energy from the sun. The heat energy then radiates out and the surrounding area gets hotter.
