Why New York is called Big Apple?

 New York City is 400 years older and one of the world's most populous megacities.As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.New York City has many nicknames, but its most popular one is "The Big Apple."

Some other nicknames  are "The City That Never Sleeps," "Empire City," "Gotham" and "The City So Nice They Named It Twice.

Firstly In 1909, Edward Martin's book 'The Wayfarer in New York' called the city the  Big Apple. Gradually  this name became popular later.
John J. FitzGerald, (জন জে ফিটজ জেরাল্ড) was a horse-racing writer for The Morning Telegraph in the 1920's and was the first to popularize the term "The Big Apple."
While on assignment in New Orleans, FitzGerald overheard African-American stablehands refer to New York City race-courses as "The Big Apple." FitzGerald loved the term so much that he named his racing column "Around The Big Apple." The title to the column became synonymous with the New York City racing scene.

A decade later many jazz musicians began calling the City "The Big Apple" to refer to New York City . Soon the nickname became synonymous with New York City and its cultural diversity.

To boost tourism in 1971, the city initiated a campaign led by Charles Gillett, president of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, according to the New York Times.

The campaign, with help from Phillips, showcased red apples to attract visitors, intending to present a vibrant and cheerful image in contrast to the prevailing perception of the city as plagued by crime and poverty.

Consequently, the city enthusiastically invited tourists to "take a bite out of the Big Apple.

The corner on which John J. FitzGerald resided from 1934 to 1963, be designated "Big Apple Corner."

Today, "The Big Apple" name is used exclusively to refer to New York City, and is used with regularity by journalists and news headline writers across the English-speaking world.
